PERSPECTIVES

NETHERLANDS

Known for its tulips, canals, windmills, cheese, and bicycles, this country is beyond charming! It is called the Netherlands because a big part of the country is literally below sea level. After spending time in the must-see city of Amsterdam, head out into the countryside to truly see the real Dutch landscape.

ABSOLUTE MUSTS

Canals of Amsterdam

Stroll along the many canals of Amsterdam including the Herengracht Canal (Gentlemen’s Canal), Keizergracht Canal (Emperor’s Canal), and the Prinsengracht (Prince’s Canal).  The Herengracht is considered to be the most important canals in the city. In the 17th century, the most influential people (mayors, wealthy merchants) resided along this canal. Enjoy an evening boat cruise through the canals and admire the canal houses along the way.

Kasteel Del Haar

This stunning castle sprawls across 250 acres and dates back to the 14th century. Located near Utrecht, it is the largest castle in Holland. Explore the towers, moats, bridges, and meticulous gardens.

Anne Frank House

This Secret Annex is where Anne Frank hid for more than 2 years during WWII and where she wrote her diary. Anne Frank died two months before the war ended but the diary that she wrote in the home was found and went on to become one of the most important books in the world. If you have yet to read the novel ‘Diary of Anne Frank’, you must do so before you visit this landmark to truly feel all the chills.

Visit the Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum is filled with a fantastic collection of art and antiques which date back to 1809. It is home to over 7 million items and has more than 5,000 paintings that are found throughout 250 rooms. One of the most famous paintings in the museum is the ‘The Night Watch’ which is a painting made in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn. Check out the outdoor space behind the museum and spend some time in the garden.

Eat Cheese!

Yes, sample cheese! Amsterdam offers plenty of cheese boutiques throughout the city. As one of the biggest dairy producers in the world, The Netherlands has no shortage of cheese. My favourite? Gouda!
