PERSPECTIVES

CZECH REPUBLIC

The Czech Republic, located in Central Europe, is a nation known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and picturesque landscapes. Prague, the capital, features a medieval Old Town, while the country boasts beautiful castles and lush Bohemian forests. It's a member of the EU and has a diverse cultural heritage, including renowned contributions in literature, music, and film.

ABSOLUTE MUSTS

Český Krumlov

The charming town of Český Krumlov, located about 3 hours outside of Prague, is celebrated for its well-preserved medieval architecture. The centerpiece is Český Krumlov Castle, a vast complex with beautiful gardens and Baroque theater. Winding through the town, the Vltava River creates a picturesque backdrop and the town’s cobblestone streets are lined with quaint shops, cafes, and historic buildings. You truly feel like you have stepped back in time when wandering through this fairytale town. A trip to Český Krumlov is great for a day trip or an overnight getaway and can be easily visited by bus or train (I opted for the bus since there were no transfers along the way). The cost is approximately $12 CAD per person each way.

Sunrise on Charles Bridge

There are a number of prime locations to catch the sunrise in Prague, but these are my top picks! Charles Bridge offers a beautiful vantage point to watch the sunrise over the Vltava River with the Prague Castle in the background. Old Town Square during sunrise is the one time of day, you might actually feel like you have the square (almost) to yourself. Framed by colorful buildings and the Astronomical Clock, the sunrise sets a magical glow on the square. The Prague Castle grounds provide another beautiful view of the city rooftops and architecture.

Lesser Town Bridge Tower

The Lesser Town Bridge Tower  is a striking Gothic tower located at the entrance of Charles Bridge. This historic landmark serves as a gateway to the picturesque Lesser Town (Malá Strana) district and offers panoramic views of the Vltava River, Charles Bridge, and the city below. Prague offers several tower-view options but the scenery from Lesser Town Bridge Tower, in my opinion, was a favourite!

St. Barbara's Cathedral

St. Barbara’s Cathedral, located in Kutna Hora (a one hour train journey outside of Prague), is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Built over several centuries, its renowned for its stunning design, characterized by soaring spires, intricate vaulted ceilings, and magnificent stained glass windows. The church is dedicated to St. Barbara, the patron saint of miners, reflecting the town’s rich mining history. Its interior is adorned with impressive frescoes and sculptures, making it a prime example of late Gothic art. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a symbol of Kutná Hora’s historical and cultural significance.

Old Town Square

Old Town Square, nestled in Prague’s heart, is steeped in history. Encircled by elegant buildings spanning various styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance, it’s home to the iconic Astronomical Clock, adorning the Old Town Hall. The square bustles with life—street performers, markets, and cafes, offering a glimpse into Prague’s past and present. With its rich history, striking architecture, and lively ambiance, Old Town Square remains an iconic and enchanting destination for visitors. Arrive at sunrise to experience the quietest time of day.

Sedlec Ossuary

The Sedlec Ossuary, located in the small town of Kutná Hora, is an extraordinary bone church, also known as the “Church of Bones.” It features an intricate interior adorned with thousands of human bones, creatively arranged into chandeliers, garlands, and even a coat of arms. This unique chapel, dating back to the 14th century, serves as a haunting yet artistic reminder of mortality. It attracts visitors from around the world due to its unsettling yet fascinating display of human skeletal remains, making it one of the most unusual and iconic sites in the country. Kutna Hora is a short one hour train ride from the main train station in Prague and the cost is approximately $30CAD round trip.

St. Vitus Cathedral

Prague Castle

Perched majestically atop Prague’s skyline, Prague Castle reigns as Europe’s largest ancient castle complex. Its storied walls encompass centuries of history, housing magnificent structures like St. Vitus Cathedral, Basilica of St. George, and the Old Royal Palace. The castle is a testament to various architectural styles, featuring courtyards, gardens, and panoramic vistas. Surrounded with tales of kings, emperors, and Czech sovereignty, Prague Castle is the nucleus of Czech power since the 9th century.

Savour a Trdelník

Trdelník is a traditional Czech pastry, known for its sweet and comforting flavors. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not originally Czech but has become a beloved street food in Prague. The dough is rolled into a long strip, wrapped around a cylinder, and roasted over an open flame or hot coals until golden and crispy on the outside. It’s often coated with sugar, cinnamon, or nuts, giving it a delightful sweetness (or try it with Nutella or ice cream!). Trdelník is enjoyed freshly made and warm (the fresher the better!!), offering a comforting and indulgent treat while exploring Prague’s streets.
