This small town on the Nam Song River (about 4 hours North of Vientene) offers rugged mountain views, flowing rivers, and stunning limestone cliffs. If you’re a fan of the show ‘Friends’, you’ll find this playing in every bar and restaurant along the main road (at least this was the case when I visited, and may now be different!). The area is known for its countless caves so be sure to explore a few while you’re in town.
This charming town is another great stop that is not to be missed. Visit the morning market, enjoy lunch in a cute cafe, wander through the local shops, and explore the many temples showcasing ancient architecture. It’s the ideal spot for a few relaxing days.
A short distance from Luang Prabang is a stunning three-tiered waterfall on a steep hill with shallow pools. The largest waterfall section is 60m high. The site is well-maintained with walkways, and swimming is permitted in some pools (check for current restrictions prior to visiting though).
The Palace was at one time the residence of King Sisavang Vong and his family. Now a museum, it is worth a visit if you wish to learn about the history and culture of Laos. The palace is also surrounded by beautiful gardens – a perfect place to enjoy a morning stroll.
